چکیده

Respiratory response to repeated sequences of mild negative inspiratory pressure (NIP) was investigated. Ten healthy male subjects were spontaneously breathing on a Siemens Servo Ventilator. The ventilator delivered the NIP loading (-2 cm H2O during 30 seconds at 1 min interval) and was also used as a measuring device. Six transient response sequences were ensemble-averaged to discern changes in the same order as normal variation of breathing at rest. Analysis of variance showed that NIP caused a moderate reduction in ventilation (VI), that was not compensated by increased respiratory activity (P0.1). The intra-individual coefficient of variation of these two breathing parameters decreased markedly (p < 0.05), in a way that resembles restrictive lung disease. NIP loading might be an alternative test for clinical assessment of the lung and respiratory function. It is simple, and with repeated measurements, the sensitivity can be adjusted to interfere minimally with the patient.

Measurement of air trapping, intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure, and dynamic hyperinflation in mechanically ventilated patients.

Severe airflow obstruction is a common cause of acute respiratory failure. Dynamic hyperinflation affects tidal ventilation, increases airways resistance, and causes intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure (auto-PEEP). Most patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have dynamic hyperinflation and auto-PEEP during mechanical ventilation, which can cause hemodynamic compro...

Control of breathing in mechanically ventilated patients.

During mechanical ventilation, the respiratory system is under the influence of two pumps, the ventilator pump and the patient's own respiratory muscles. Depending on the mode of mechanical ventilatory support, ventilation may be totally controlled by the ventilator or may be determined by the interaction between patient respiratory effort and ventilator function. In either case, compared to sp...

HY POXIA AND I TS INFLUEN CES ON THE CARDIOVASCULAR AND RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS OF SPONTANEOUSLY BREATHING CATS

Effects of acute systemic hypoxia on the cardiovascular system (CYS) and respiration of spontaneously breathing cats were studied in two conditions. 1): Hypoxic air (6-8% 02 in N2) was given to the animal to induce systemic hypoxia for 20 minutes. Hyperventilation at this condition lowered arterial C02 tension (PaC02 hypocapnia). 2): In the second run, induction of hypocapnia was prevented ...

Work of breathing and airway occlusion pressure during assist-mode mechanical ventilation.

We determined the effect of varying ventilator tidal volume (VT) and inspiratory flow (V) on the inspiratory muscle work (WI) during assist-mode mechanical ventilation (AMV) in four healthy subjects. In another four subjects, under constant chemoreceptor input, we determined the responses of neuromuscular output as assessed by the mouth occlusion pressure (P0.1) to alteration in WI. During AMV,...
